Chapter Ten

Roman couldn’t believe he’d come home barely twenty-four hours ago. From worrying about his reception to taking action, he’d gone through phases he’d thought would take weeks, at lightning speed. He sat in his Barracuda, directly across the street from his mother’s surprisingly not-so-shitty house.

Progress—it’d come way quicker and easier than he’d expected. Both for her and himself. That made him nervous.

It hadn’t quite given him the time he’d needed to process everything. Hell, he hadn’t even touched base with the psychologist recommended by his program for continued therapy. What if this went south and he had no safety net? Well, other than the Hot Rods.

Fragile. He felt like one wrong move might shatter his advances and put him back at square one. None of them would be able to handle that. He swore he’d make an appointment with the recommended doctor as soon as they got back to the loft.

“Was this a mistake?” He looked over at Carver.

“We don’t have to go to the door.” Meep smiled at him as if this whole stakeout were no big deal. “We can sit here for a while. Or leave now. Whatever you want. Nothing’s stopping us from doing this another day. Or never. Up to you.”

“Maybe it’s better to get it over with so I don’t have to stew on it forever.” Already, acid churned in his gut and the need for a drink to settle his nerves was starting to make his mouth feel dry. Fuck that. No more hiding from his problems. That only led to more trouble.

Before he quite knew what he was about to do, he’d opened his door and climbed from the car. Purple metallic paint, expertly applied by Sally, blazed in the afternoon sunshine, making it seem like what he was about to do wasn’t quite so dreadful.

The reminder of his friends gave him a dose of courage.

Carver’s outstretched hand supplied the final bit he needed to move forward. He clasped his roommate’s fingers and marched up the neatly edged sidewalk. Every single step forward made his heart pound twice as fast as the one before.

“Seriously, Cuda.” Carver tried one more time to change his mind. “There’s no rush.”

Except, right about then, something moved in the front picture window. A rustle of curtains that had both of them slowing their stride. Thing was, the face that peeked out from behind the eyelet fabric wasn’t that of a grown woman. It was a kid.

And he looked shocked and panicked as hell.

What the fuck?

“Did you see that, Meep?” Barracuda spoke softly, but of course his partner heard.

“Yeah. Shit.” The guy groaned. “There’s no going back now. I’m sorry, Roman. If you want, I’ll handle it, but we gotta knock, right?”

“Hell yes. I’m not leaving here until I get some answers.” Icy fear stabbed his guts. It wasn’t safe…

Please don’t let us be too late.

Roman banged on the door, then jammed his thumb over the doorbell a half-dozen times. He might have kicked the damn thing in, but Carver stopped him with a gentle tug on their still-linked hands.
